Beach Training was a blast!
07/14/08
Thanks to all those students and families who made the trip to Santa Cruz for the annual USAMA Beach Training. It was great to see such great dedication and a desire to experience a different kind of training. Remember to practice the new techniques and skills you learned! Also, like Shihan Krupa said at the conclusion of the beach training, we hope you will appreciate the amount of knowledge and experience that the several dedicated Sensei's shared with you. Many of the higher ranking Sensei's have been training at USAMA for over 20 years (and trained along side me) and bring with them a diverse knowledge of the martial arts including disciplines such as Karate, Judo, Aikido, Jujitsu & Jiu Jitsu, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Kobudo, Muay Thai, Iado, and MMA. It really is a great treat to have them all together at the same time to share their extensive knowledge with the students.

Let’s be Respectful to our Neighbors
06/05/08
Parents, this is just a friendly reminder to drop off and pick up your child on time. Help us to be courteous to our neighbor, Central Coast Gymnastics as they are not responsible to watch karate children before or after class. Overall it is rare, but occasionally some of our USAMA students have been left unsupervised in the Central Coast Gymnastics play area before or after karate class. As you know, unsupervised kids have a way of being disruptive. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we continue to work hard to show respect to our neighbors at Central Coast Gymnastics.

“Sensei, I am going to fail and this is why…”
04/22/08
It has always been interesting to me that when it comes to belt testing several students all of a sudden approach me with explanations of injuries, strenuous activities the day before or late night assignments that give them a legitimate reason (at least to them) not to perform well on their belt test. While some of these reports may be legitimate, it seems peculiar that these excuses tend to rise as testing nears. After many years testing students, when I hear these stories of injuries, strenuous workouts the day prior, or late night assignments, what I hear is: "Sensei, I am going to fail my test or not due my best because of these reasons..." This is a mind set that justifies poor performance to the student and prepares them for failure instead of success. I would much rather hear, "Sensei, I am ready to do my best tonight because I have prepared so well for this test that even a late night last night won't stop me. Now that is a mindset that brings SUCCESS!
